The mission of Classic American Hardwoods is to enrich the lives of its employees, customers, and vendors by responsibly purchasing, manufacturing, and marketing hardwood lumber products; our world's only renewable natural resource.
Started in president and founder Bill Courtney's living room in 2001, Classic American Hardwoods, Inc. has become one of the most respected and recognized lumber companies in the world. We have taken and continue to adhere to a forward thinking and customer oriented approach to hardwood lumber production, sales, and service. This attitude and willingness to meet customer specifications and sorts, have grown our sales to over $50,000,000 USD annually.
Started on an old, industrial parcel of abandoned 17 acres in North Memphis, our business now encompasses 43 acres and employs 120 people. Additionally, in 2007 we opened our Shanghai, China office and in 2008 followed with our office in Hoh Chi Minh City, Vietnam. From our meager beginnings servicing customers in only a handful of states and having never exported lumber until 2006, we now have active customers in 39 U.S. states and 27 countries.
Operationally, we have met the demands of our growing customer base. In 2010, we built 360,000 bf of new kiln capacity bringing our total to 1,000,025 bf. During this expansion we also updated our boilers to meet all new EPA standards, updated the controls and conditioning processes of our existing kilns, added another kiln dried production line, and cleared ground for our brand new, state-of-the-art automated and optimized LICO production line.
While we have only been in existence 18 years, a relatively short time for such an established industry, our history is rich with innovation, growth, and most importantly, customer satisfaction. Because we refuse to be bound by traditionally perceived restrictions of our industry, we will continue to strive to outperform our competition and meet our customers' ever-changing needs and specifications. We look forward to continued business with our current customers and partners and hope to continue our growth and development of both.
Letter from the President
In 2001, Classic American Hardwoods, Inc. transformed from a dream to a reality. There are so many people including customers, vendors, and employees to who so much thanks is owed that they are too too numerous to mention individually. Suffice it to say, though, we at CAH know where we came from, who helped us get there, and how fortunate we are to have the plethora of remarkable relationships we have. One prevailing lesson we have learned over the last 10 years is that much like hardwoods themselves, no company is perfect. However, what is crucial is that we remain committed to the aspiration of perfection. While we recognize that there is no finish line in this particular race, we remain undaunted at the task, and we have a three step approach.
First and absolutely foremost, we are committed to service. We recognize that our customers need fair prices and quality products. Frankly, there are many hardwood lumber producers in the world that can provide fair prices and quality products. Our goal is to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the pack with the way we handle our customers. We are dedicated to doing what we say we are going to do - period! Shop dates are not an estimate at CAH, there are an absolute. Customers' special needs are a welcome priority rather than an inconvenience. Availability of CAH personnel is a 24 hour, 7 day a week commitment - your contact is never closed for business. Your problem is our problem and our solution is yours. At CAH, we know who pays our bills and we plan to keep them happy.
Secondly, we are committed to our employees. We are not an old, fourth generation company who expects the industry to treat us as if we have a place at the emperor's table. Quite the opposite, we are owned and run by simply hard working people who shared a dream of creating something new and different in an old, established industry. This takes good people working very hard together, and at CAH, that is exactly what you find. There is no such thing as "That's not my job," or "I'll get to that tomorrow." To achieve such an attitude and teamwork, the mentality must start at the top. No manager will instruct any employee to do what they have both not already done themselves in the past or do not stand ready to do again if needed. CAH wants to elevate all of its employees by sharing its good fortunes with those who helped the good fortune to happen. Therefore, every CAH employee realizes that what is good for the company is ultimately good for them.
Lastly, we are committed to our resource. While we are FSC® certified, it is a much larger scope that we view our resource from. At CAH, we feel it is of the utmost importance to defend our right to operate freely. Our resource is not just the timber base we harvest our goods from, but also the industry that we operate in. Our marketplace and our industry's foes like intrusive governments, fraud, and the environmentally misinformed are best combated with simply, honest truth. Ours is the only renewable natural resource in the world. The very industry that exists because of the resource is the last that would ever destroy it. At CAH, we are committed to both this message and exposing the detractors that fair to profit from silencing it.
In summary, we are a dedicated company with committed people who are serious about our resource, our employees, and most importantly, our customers. It is our goal to earn your business one load at a time whether you are an established customer of you are giving us your first order. While there is no finish line, we always strive to lead the race.
